Raven-Symone the child acting star from the Cosby Show, now a 35 year old household name celebrity has struggled with ups and downs in her weight for several years. She attributes her weight struggles to stress and emotional eating during her blossoming career.

In 2011 she successfully lost 70 pounds but later gained it back and more. She states she's tried every diet fad out there, but every time she's lost the weight she was never comfortable talking about it. This time things are different for her in how she achieved her weight loss. In a recent interview with Good Morning America she shares what's changed about her weight loss tactics that allowed her to lose nearly 30 pounds in 3 months without exercise, and why she thinks she will be able to keep it off and lose more over the long term. Keep reading to find out Raven-Symone's keys to weight loss success and keeping the weight off.

Reven-Symone's 4 Keys To Weight Loss Success

1. Minimal Exercise:
Raven states in her interview that she engaged in "minimal exercise," to achieve her 30 pound weight loss. Yes it is true, you can lose weight and keep weight off without partaking in intentional exercise. In order to lose weight you simply need to put your body in a calorie deficit and this can be achieved through changes in diet alone. I personally only workout twice a week consistently myself. But if you change your diet and add exercise as well you could create a greater calorie deficit and potentially achieve faster weight loss. Even if you choose not to workout to lose weight it is important that you still try and be as active as possible in the form of walking at least 5,000-10,000 steps a day to maintain joint, and cardiovascular health.

2. Low Carb:
The second tactic Raven states she is using to lose weight is adapting a low carb diet. Decreasing your carbohydrate intake to lose weight is definitely not a new concept. Carbohydrates are typically energy dense foods, meaning they contain a lot of calories. Eating excess calories leads to weight gain and fat storage, so cutting carbohydrates can be an effective way to cut calories to aid weight loss. A recent scientific research view even found adapting a low carb diet to be more beneficial than a low fat diet to aid weight loss, and to improve cholesterol and blood lipid profiles(1).

3. Fasting 14:10:  The next lifestyle change Raven has adopted to help her lose weight is fasting. She states she utilizes a 14:10 fasting window, where she does not eat for 14 hours during the day. And sometimes she does 3 full day fast as well. She states she sustains herself during her fasts by drinking a lot of water with electrolytes or bone broth. There are numerous research articles that show the benefits of fasting to aid weight loss and to improve general health as well(2).

4. Mindset Shift From Focus On The Scale To Improving Health:
Lastly to achieve weight loss Raven says her goals for weight loss are much different now than in the past. In the interview she states, "Every time I've lost weight in the past it was about size." Now she is taking a more positive health focus approach to weight loss. She states, "I'm not over here trying to be a little twig." "I want to make sure that my body is healthy and prepared to deal with old age."

Conclusion
There are 2 important factors in determining weight loss success. The first factor to weight loss success is your ability to put yourself in a calorie deficit whether trough exercise alone, diet alone, or a combination of exercise and diet. Sustainability is the second factor. Raven-Symone's interview touches on both of these factors. Most diet fads simply do not work over the long term because people do not learn or undertake sustainable practices to lose the weight. Diet fads are great at putting you in a calorie deficit to lose weight, but fall short because they are too hard to maintain and people gain the weight back once they stop.

This idea of sustainability is the reason why what works for me to lose weight may not work for you and Raven touches on this in her interview stating, "This is what's working for me." She also shares that she hasn't bought any new clothes because, she wants to make sure she can maintain the new healthy lifestyle.

Yes Keto works for some people, fasting for others, going vegan for you, and simply exercise for me. We all have different struggles in life and different bad habits to overcome to achieve weight loss success. In order for your weight loss efforts to be successful, you have to figure out what works for yourself individually in terms of creating SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE change.

I believe the first thing we can do when wanting to lose weight, is to step back take a look in the mirror and ask ourselves, why do I want to lose weight? If your answer to this question revolves around extrinsic factors like the weight on the scale or impressing others, then you may just fail in the long term. But rather have a mindset shift and focus intrinsically on your health. Focus on living a long fulfilled healthy life, and have this be the driving force of your weight loss. When you do this, I think you will see greater weight loss success. If you are reading this because you too are on a weight loss or health journey, I wish you good luck!
