Beans Best for Those with Diabetes

Why are beans an excellent food

choice for individuals with diabetes?

  1.  Beans are one of the best sources of dietary fiber. Fiber not only makes you feel full longer, but also slows digestion and keeps blood sugar from spiking after a meal.
  2. Beans eaten often with a well balanced nutritious diet can help keep blood sugar in control and lower blood sugar for the long term. Cow peas, commonly called white beans or brown beans in Nigeria or black eye peas in the United States, are a virtually fat free, low calorie food item that should be added to any ones diet who is trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.
  3. I can't forget to mention that beans have more protein than any other non-animal food item, also making it a great vegan food item for those trying to bulk up and gain muscle.
  4. 1 1/2 cup of beans have roughly 130 calories, less than 1g of fat, 10g of protein, and 5 grams of fiber. Check out this bean porridge recipe for a great way to cook beans.
